CHAPTER 15

Martyr at the Stake

1555

‘Father in Heaven! Have mercy on me!’

n Deane Churchyard there stands a beautifully carved Celtic style cross set into a decorated block of stone. This is the George Marsh memorial cross, erected to man who died 450 years ago, but whose bravery in standing up for what he believed in earned him a place in the annals of national history as well as in Bolton history. He also had the distinction of being Bolton’s only Christian martyr.

George Marsh was born in Deane in 1515, the son of a yeoman farmer. He received a decent enough education and then became a farmer himself. He married in 1540 but his wife died while their children were still young. It was a grievous blow to him and he turned to the Church for comfort. Deciding that he wanted to devote himself to religion he left his children in the care of his mother and went to study at Cambridge University. Fellow Boltonians, James and Leonard Pilkington, sons of Lord Pilkington of Rivington, were also studying there. So too were Thomas, Ralph and John Lever of Darcy Lever not far from Bolton.
